Project Summary

The Youth Mentorship will develop and deliver a relationship-based mentoring 4-week pilot project involving Haíɫzaqv youth and local expertise. Informed by our own local historians and cultural leaders, this excellent opportunity will foster ancestorial wisdom, knowledge and history as they transition into adulthood.

Key activities

Hire 10 youth ages 13 -15 who will participate in the following activities that will promote and create wellness, resiliency, overall positive mental health and a strong foundation.

  • Life Skills
  • Haíɫzaqv History
  • Introduction in Haíɫzaqvḷa
  • G̓ví’ilas – Laws of our Ancestors
  • Place Based Learning
  • Cedar bark weaving
  • Drum Making
  • Drumming, Singing & Dancing
  • Photo Shoot
  • Cultural exchange trip

Expected Outcomes

  • Will learn basic life skills acquired through learning or direct life experience that enable the youth to effectively handle issues and problems commonly encountered in daily life
  • Will learn haíɫzaqv history; 5 main tribes, 4 main crests, creation stories and hereditary leadership
  • Will learn family lineage and how to introduce self, parents and tribes
  • Will learn G̓ví’ilas – Laws of our Ancestors
  • Will participate in placed based learning in our territory to learn about cultural features that affirm our existence and occupancy since time began
  • Will harvest cedar bark, prep bark with a local weaver and make their own head piece
  • 6 Interested youth will be included in a photo shoot and see their personal beauty through the lens of a professional photographer
  • Will practice the children’s dance series, songs and stories to prepare for a cultural exchange trip to Haida Gwaii pole raising event August 19 & 20

  • July 11, 2022 – August July 5, 2022
  • Term position – Summer 2022 position
  • Monday to Friday
  • 4 hrs a day 10 am – 3 pm
